Art at the Speed of Life Review

Art at the Speed of Life Review
The premise of this book is to fit art and creativity into a busy life. The book is comprised of seven chapters in which are interspersed ideas for living a creative life, finding inspiration, an artist spotlight project, and journaling techniques.

The book is an artwork in itself, lavishly illustrated with easily accessible projects using items that are likely already in your stash of art supplies. One of the wonderful aspects of the projects is that they are so easily accomplished regardless of skill level.

One of my favorite topics in the Speed of Life Projects contained in each chapter is creating multiples of whatever you are making, in this case multiple painted art journal backgrounds. Making multiple backgrounds in your art journal will enable you to sit down and collage those backgrounds or paint over them without having to set-up the background first, a messy project in itself. In order to fit art into a busy life, time must be used to the best advantage. This book helps you do that in a non-threatening, non-stressful manner.

In addition to projects, tips and techniques, there are short articles on keeping art affordable, living artfully, creating an art blog, unsticking yourself from creative block, and so much more.

Some of the contributors are well-known names in the field including Jodi Ohl. Even if you try none of the projects assigned in this book, you will obtain much inspiration from just perusing the illustrations. Unlike many art books that over-promise and under-deliver, this book hits the mark with every topic.

At the end of the book is a "Declaration of Reclamation." It reminds readers to find time to be creative, to set goals for your creative practice, use your favorite products and techniques and organize yourself. Decent advice. It also suggests that you tear the page out and place it where you can see it. Please remember, if it's a library book, librarians generally frown on that sort of thing. A digital image would work much better.

Have fun and enjoy the creativity. After all, that's really what it's all about.

Note: I checked this book out of my local library and have used it for several projects. I have received no compensation of any kind for the review. I also did not tear out the page in the back of the book.
